Race Report: Hood To Coast 2022 (Van 2 and the Dojo of Pain)

POV: You finish a pretty non-exemplary run in, oh, let’s say, Kansas City, and your mile time is decent, but it’s not anything you think is groin-grabbingly amazing. You upload said run to Strava and are hit with a few kudos and one comment that makes you do a double take: “Want to join a Hood to Coast team this Friday?”

    It’s currently Monday.

A Conversational Pace – Lauren Ross of Rose City Track Club on Themed Runs, Tears in Heaven, and Asking for Pain (sorta)

I first found out about Rose City Track Club when this dude passed me on the Reed College campus during the 2021 PDX Marathon. I was cruising, or so I thought, until a Tracksmith singlet emblazoned with RCTC came into my peripheral and then off into the sunset. (NOTE: It was my first race and I went a little hard in the first 10… Feel like I COULD HAVE paced him better, but, shrug emoji next time…) Plus I already talked about all this. The memory is just burned into my brain.

Between this introduction to RCTC, and my previously-mentioned difficulty of finding friends this “late in life,” the people I’ve met as a result of this track club have been some of the nicest and most welcoming, not to mention just genuinely stoked on seemingly everything.

Race Report – Haulin Aspen: Part 1 – Wherein we weigh spectacular vs. mediocre.

“If it’s not fun, why are you doing it.” This was my wife, to me, the night before the Haulin Aspen trail full marathon in Bend, OR, on August 13th, 2022. You see, for some reason, the night before this race, I was an anxious mess. Snapping at my dumb ol’ dogs, getting impatient with seemingly everything, paying more attention to how many Maurten gels I was bringing versus brushing our daughters’ teeth… I was an asshole. I’ll just say it. This was all until my wife laid the aforementioned platitude on me, and I calmed the f*ck down.

It was really only about 10 mins before the gun that I truly felt ready to run Haulin Aspen. But the story of this race starts a bit earlier than 10 minutes prior to start. No shit, right…

A Conversational Pace – Ryan Yambra on Rational Optimism, Running Tights, and Rose City Track Club

Back, back, way back, I used to have no friends because I had just moved to Portland from San Diego. I shouldn’t say I had NO friends. I had a few, but also, it’s sorta tough making new friends when you’re nearing 40, just moved to a new place, and pretty regularly like to watch Always Sunny on Hulu versus “attending local events.” All this to say, it wasn’t until I ran the 2021 Portland Marathon that I got introduced to Rose City Track Club (mainly because some dude in an RCTC singlet passed me around mile 16, and I vowed to find out who it was…)

  • a case for running without headphones.

Ive been running for years now, off and on…. Really since high school when i was somewhat forced into track. Honestly, i had nothing else to do after school while i waited for my older brother to finish baseball practice. So, track. But that’s not the point of this story, and sorry for a shitty start.

But, yeah… been running for years. Between different shoes, outfits, distances, “desires and goals,” and styles (track, trail, road, etc.), one thing really remained constant: headphones pumping my brain full of Alkaline Trio, Blood Brothers, Aesop Rock, Wu Tang, and other familiar hits that i felt were the only things that could possibly keep my legs pumping, especially on those longer runs.
